Overview
As a Responsible Administrator for livestock identification in Canada, CCIA approves indicators (tags) used for regulated species. While each manufacturer may have unique tag designs, all approved indicators must meet standardized criteria.
It’s important to note that every tag is designed to work with a specific applicator—there is no universal option. For example, switching from Allflex to Y-Tex tags means switching applicators too, as they are not interchangeable.

The current range of Approved cattle indicators and applicators available through the CCIA Webstore.

Tags
Approved CCIA animal indicators/tags are required to have demonstrated specific retention characteristics. In order to meet all requirements defined in the standards, procedures and testing document, all animal tags must pass a series of extensive trials to test visual, mechanical, physical, electrical, readability and environmental capabilities. CCIA is continuously testing tags for potential approval for use in the Canadian Cattle Identification Program.
Approved CCIA non-breed specific beef tags have the following attributes:
-
- A unique, 15-digit CCIA identification number
- CCIA trademark (3/4 Maple Leaf and “CA” letters)
- Vary in colour
- Meet all requirements in the National Testing Framework for approval of tags
The unique, 15-digit CCIA identification number follows the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 11784 code structure for identification.
It reads electronically as:
| LA | 00000 | 0 | 124 | 000299999999 | ||||
| Animal | Reserved | Count | Country | Unique 15-digit Identification Number |
SPECIAL NOTE: New regulations and communication will see a shift in language from the use of “Approved Canadian Cattle Identification Agency Radio Frequency Identification Tags” to the use of “Approved Canadian Cattle Identification Agency Animal Indicators” or “Animal Indicators”. This change addresses animal identification devices that have alternative designs that may or may not include radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
SAMPLE USAGE: A livestock operator must apply an approved animal indicator to an animal prior to the animal leaving its farm of origin or the premises where it is located.
Applicators
Tag retention starts with proper application. Each manufacturer designs its tags and applicators as a matched set, working like a key and lock—only the correct combination ensures proper function.
A bent applicator pin can misalign with the stud tip, while using the wrong pin diameter may cause problems. If the pin is too small, the stud may fall off. If it’s too large, the tag may not release properly, increasing the risk of ear damage. Always use the manufacturer recommended applicator with the Approved CCIA tag of your choice and follow placement guidelines and instructions.
Why the right tool matters:
PIN COMPARISON
Pins are not interchangeable. Each pin is specifically designed for a matching applicator, and using the correct combination is essential for proper tag application. Pins differ in length, diameter, tip shape, and attachment design—mismatched components can lead to failed applications or animal injury.

PROPER PAIRING AND FIT
The stud base must sit flush with the applicator pin for stability during tagging. The pin tip should seat securely in the stud tip to ensure even pressure and clean penetration of the ear, without deflecting or exiting through the side. Proper alignment ensures effective tag placement and animal welfare.

PIN DOESN’T FIT STUD TIP
If the pin is not properly seated in the stud base or tip, the stud can become unstable, fall off, or shift during application. Misalignment may occur, preventing the male and female tag components from locking securely.

PIN LENGTH INCORRECT
An incorrect pin length may appear to seat properly but will lack stability. Under pressure, it can slip through the shaft or become lodged in the stud. Even if the stud penetrates the ear, improper fit and support can result in tag failure and potential damage to the applicator.

UNIQUE STUD TIP DESIGN
Y-Tex studs feature a reversed design compared to other approved studs. Their applicator pin is hollow, acting as a stable sleeve over the stud tip. This design improves alignment, reduces slippage, and supports consistent tag retention.
