How RFID technology is used
- CCIA allocates unique identification numbers from the Canadian Livestock Tracking System (CLTS) database to approved animal indicator/tag manufacturers for the manufacture of approved animal indicators used in the livestock identification program.
- Approved manufacturers visually and electronically embed each approved CCIA RFID animal indicator with a unique identification number allocated from the CLTS database. Each animal indicator has a transponder which consists of an encoded chip and antenna in the female portion of the device. Each indicator also has a male, back-stud pin that is used to couple the device like interlocking puzzle pieces.
- The transponder charges when it is within range of a reader’s electromagnetic waves. When the cycle is complete, the transponder transmits data (i.e., the embedded unique identification number) to the reader, which in turn receives the data or “response” from the transponder – “reading” the unique, embedded identification number.
- It is important to note, approved CCIA RFID animal indicators are passive devices designed to function without internal power. These devices have the capacity to perform for the lifetime of an animal when retained.
Approved CCIA animal indicators
Approved CCIA animal indicators are required to have demonstrated specific retention characteristics. In order to meet all requirement defined in the standards, procedures and testing document, all animal indicators must pass a series of extensive trials to test visual, mechanical, physical, electrical, readability and environmental capabilities. CCIA is continuously testing tags for potential approval for use in the Canadian Cattle Identification Program.
Approved CCIA non-breed specific beef indicators have the following attributes:
- A unique, 15-digit CCIA identification number
- CCIA trademark (3/4 Maple Leaf and “CA” letters)
- Are yellow in colour with a yellow backing stud (unless otherwise approved)
- Meet all requirements in the Canadian National Standards for RFID technology
The unique, 15-digit CCIA identification number follows the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 11784 code structure for identification.

SPECIAL NOTE: New regulations and communication will see a shift in language from the use of “Approved Canadian Cattle Identification Agency Radio Frequency Identification Tags” to the use of “Approved Canadian Cattle Identification Agency Animal Indicators” or “Animal Indicators”. This change addresses animal identification devices that have alternative designs that may or may not include radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
SAMPLE USAGE: A livestock operator must apply an approved animal indicator to an animal prior to the animal leaving its farm of origin or the premises where it is located.
There are two categories of approved RFID reader types
- Stationary readers are defined as not requiring direct human intervention in order to operate. They are intended to be installed and operated in fixed locations. Important requirements include increased read range and automated operation. Most, if not all, stationary readers will have separate transceivers and antennas.
- Mobile readers are intended to be used in applications where stationary readers are impractical. In addition to read range, other important requirements include mobility, versatility and ruggedness.
